Acatenango Porters, Horses and Gear Rental

What a porter, a horse, a rented bag or poles and luggage storage cost on an Acatenango overnight tour, where the prices are published, and what reviewers say they paid.

Updated November 2026

On most Acatenango overnight tours a porter, a horse and rented gear are extras paid on the day, often in cash. Only two listings publish porter prices: Q250 (quetzales) on one, Q300 each way on the other. One prices a horse, one way, at US$100. Reviewers report paying Q500 for a porter to camp. Ask for the price before you set off.

Other tours rent gear without a published price. On Volcano Expeditions' hike flashlights, backpacks, hiking shoes and hiking poles can be rented before the hike begins. Tours & Activities SA leaves gear out of its price and arranges rentals by WhatsApp. On Guat2do Travel Experiences’ hike, trekking gear and porters are paid on site and depend on availability, and stopping the hike part-way costs extra for return assistance.

What reviewers say they paid

The reviews below are among the 350 newest of each tour: for Volcano Expeditions, posted between 8 May and 7 November 2026; for Tours & Activities SA, between 4 March and 5 November 2026; for Marvelus Travel, between 4 December 2025 and 7 November 2026.

  • A porter to camp, Q500. A German reviewer of Volcano Expeditions' hike (July 2026) paid Q500 in cash for a porter for the four hours to camp, then turned back after 15 minutes without the money being returned; the same group paid Q450 for transport back down. A Mexican reviewer of Tours & Activities SA's tour (August 2026) paid Q500 to have her pack carried.
  • A porter one way only. A reviewer of Marvelus Travel's hike writing in French (April 2026) was quoted Q200 for a porter and charged Q300, for the way up only; a five-star reviewer of the same hike (April 2026) also notes the porter is for the way up and is paid again for the way down.
  • Rented gear. A German reviewer of Tours & Activities SA's tour (March 2026) rented shoes with holes at 25 euros a day; another (April 2026) found the rental gear in poor condition and three times the price in Antigua. Three March 2026 reviewers of the same tour say gear they had paid for was not there when the tour started.
  • Toilets. Two low reviews of Volcano Expeditions' hike (May and July 2026) say the toilets on the trail cost money.

Horses

Marvelus Travel’s hike prices a horse for one way at US$100, and a four-star reviewer of Volcano Expeditions’ hike (August 2026) mentions a horse service up to camp for an extra fee. A reviewer of Marvelus Travel's hike writing in French (April 2026) describes a horse that was exhausted and, in a guide’s words, had been forced up that morning.

Gear that comes with the price

Some tours lend the warm layers, so there is less to rent: a jacket, gloves and hat on Volcano Expeditions’ hike; warm clothes, a head torch and a liner on OX Expeditions' tour; a jacket, gloves, flashlight, raincoat, sleeping-bag liner and a 3-litre water pack on CA Travelers' hike (checked November 2026). What is included goes through ten tours item by item.

Before you go

Carry cash in quetzales for whatever you rent or hire, and for the park entrance: Q100 for a foreign visitor (Municipality of Acatenango, checked November 2026). CONRED restricted the ascent of Acatenango on 4 August 2026, during an eruption of Fuego; operators were selling dates in November 2026 when we checked. Check CONRED and INGUAT, Guatemala’s tourism institute, before you go.
