The Fuego Add-On on an Acatenango Overnight Tour
The extra evening trip towards Fuego sold on Acatenango overnight tours: what each tour calls it and charges, who runs it where that is stated, what no tour states, and the rules on Fuego.
Most Acatenango overnight tours sell an evening trip towards Fuego as an extra, not in the tour price. Where a price is given it is Q200 to Q300 (quetzales) a person, and some tours give none. On one tour the trip is not operated by the company that sells it, and only one tour says where its trip goes. CONRED, Guatemala’s disaster-reduction agency, said on 9 August 2026 that the ascent of Fuego is not authorized.

Who runs it
Who runs it is stated on only one tour. On Guat2do Travel Experiences' hike the Fuego hike is an optional activity not operated by the company, paid directly to the local guides, for a very high level of fitness, 3 to 5 hours there and back and at the hiker’s own risk. On the others, who leads it is not stated.
Where it goes
Where the Fuego trek goes is stated by one tour only, Pachamama Tours’ in the table above: a 3.5-hour round trip leaving at 4 PM, with 30 minutes “just 200 meters” from the eruptions, at “an altitude of 3,768 meters” (the quoted words are Pachamama Tours’). The other tours do not say. Fuego’s summit is 3,763 m (CONAP, 2008; INSIVUMEH), and CONRED said on 9 August 2026 that the ascent of Fuego is not authorized.
The rules on Fuego
- The ascent of Fuego is not authorized. CONRED said so on 9 August 2026, for civilians and for staff of the institutions in its system (Emisoras Unidas).
- No staying or camping on La Meseta or El Camellón. The Municipality of Acatenango forbids it because of the danger of glowing rock thrown out by Fuego, and INSIVUMEH’s daily bulletin of 7 November 2026 says not to remain on the meseta or near the crater.
- Acatenango itself was closed to hikers for a time. CONRED restricted the ascent of Acatenango on 4 August 2026, during an eruption of Fuego; operators were selling dates in November 2026 when we checked. Check CONRED and INGUAT, Guatemala’s tourism institute, before you go.

What reviewers say about it
In the 350 newest reviews of Volcano Expeditions' hike (8 May to 7 November 2026), 6 of the 35 low ones with text are about the Fuego trip: that it cost extra, or that the group saw little or nothing from it in cloud or in the dark. On Tours & Activities SA's tour (350 newest, 4 March to 5 November 2026), an October 2026 reviewer says the extra cost of the Fuego trip was not made clear and an extra 10 % fee was then added.
Before you decide
If the trip towards Fuego matters to you, ask the operator before you book what it costs, who leads it and where it goes, and check CONRED’s latest word on the day. What is included shows what else each overnight tour leaves out of its price.
