Every Acatenango overnight tour sleeps at a base camp below the summit, but the bed differs a lot from one operator to the next: a shared dome or cabin on the cheapest tours, an A-frame cabin with a mattress and pillow, a small-group cabin, or a glamping tent. The cheapest tours put several people in each shelter. Volcano Expeditions' hike gives no number; in the 350 newest reviews of its hike (8 May to 7 November 2026), three of the low ones count five or six people to a shelter.
Cold at night
Every tour sleeps high on the volcano, and cold nights are the most common complaint about the beds. At Acatenango Experience VIP's base camp the temperature is 0 °C to 4 °C. Bring a warm hat, gloves and extra socks whichever bed you book; the cheaper tours lend a jacket, gloves and a hat, and Tours & Activities SA rents gear through WhatsApp before the tour.
What the low reviews say about the beds
Of the 350 newest reviews of Tours & Activities SA’s tour (4 March to 5 November 2026), 49 give three stars or fewer and 31 of those have text. Sixteen of the 31 are about the cabin, the bedding or the cold: sleeping bags that were damp, torn, without liners or with broken zips, cabins that let the cold in through a hole or a door that would not close, and one March 2026 reviewer who slept under a tarp instead of the A-frame cabin.
The low reviews of Volcano Expeditions' hike run the same way: 8 of the 35 with text complain that the sleeping quarters were crowded or cold.

CONRED restricted the ascent of Acatenango on 4 August 2026, during an eruption of Fuego; operators were selling dates in November 2026 when we checked. Check CONRED and INGUAT, Guatemala’s tourism institute, before you go. The Municipality of Acatenango does not allow staying or camping in the areas called La Meseta and El Camellón.
